CONTRASTING DIRECTIONS AND TONES

A small river running across shallows creates a minute series of rapids. There are enough small worn stones jutting above the surface to give structure to the area of water. Ensure that the marks you use to show the grassy banks contrast with the marks you use for the water. The texture of water and grass is markedly different, and you must differentiate through your mark-making. Nearly all the marks made for the banks are with a vertical bias, whereas nearly all the marks made for the water have a horizontal bias. Now let’s look at the tones in detail. Notice the very light patches of reflection wherever the water ripples over or close to stones. These occur because the light tends to flicker on the ripples of the more broken surfaces in the stream. Where the water is deeper or slowed down by a bend in the river, you will find the reflections of overhanging trees making strong dark areas with much smoother ripples. Any stones projecting above the surface of the stream will help to define these different areas of tone.
